====== Unix Systems Administrator & Perl Programmer ====== ===== Job Description ===== JOB TITLE: Unix Systems Administrator and Perl Programmer ---- DEPARTMENT: Information Technology Services ---- GRADE: 6 ---- RANGE: $44,500 - $55,500 (**Let us Talk about this.**) ---- \\ TYPICAL DUTIES: The Unix Systems Administrator will provide administrative support to ensure reliability, availability and security of the University's central unix systems hardware and software (50%). The Perl Programmer will support the ePortfolio framework (50%). Reports to the Unix Systems Group Manager of Information Technology Services. \\ ---- \\ RESPONSIBILITIES: \\ * Provide Unix Systems Administration support * Install, configure and maintain central servers and applications * Plan, perform, upgrade and improve operating systems and applications * Monitor and improve overall systems security * Provide programming expertise to ePortfolio project (primarily Perl) * Participate in periodic emergency on-call rotation * Develop policies, procedures and best practices \\ ---- \\ MINIMUM DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: \\ * Bachelor's degree and three years experience with Unix System Administration, or an equivalent combination of education and related work experiences. * Proven proficiency with: UNIX (particularly Linux) system administration * Proven proficiency developing web based applications using Perl \\ Demonstrated proficiency in: \\ * Using diagnostic tools such as strace, truss, ethereal * Working knowledge of scripting languages such as bash, perl and php. * Working knowledge of client browsers, web servers * Working knowledge of MySQL * Proven ability to independently solve problems. \\ ---- \\ PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field. Prior experience in a university setting. Open to new ideas and technologies, and wants to learn. Demonstrated knowledge in many of the following topics: \\ * experience with redhat enterprise Linux or other unix flavors (Debian, Ubuntu) * experience with developing and deploying web based applications using Perl * knowledge of Oracle a plus * knowledge of HTTP protocol a plus \\ ---- \\ COMPETENCIES: Interpersonal skills, functional/technical skills, written and oral communication, presentation skills, teamwork/collaboration, problem solving, peer relationships.
