JOB TITLE: Unix Systems Administrator and Perl Programmer

RANGE: $44,500 - $55,500 (Let us Talk about this.)
TYPICAL DUTIES: The Unix Systems Administrator will provide administrative support to ensure reliability, availability and security of the University's central unix systems hardware and software (50%). The Perl Programmer will support the ePortfolio framework (50%). Reports to the Unix Systems Group Manager of Information Technology Services.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide Unix Systems Administration support
Install, configure and maintain central servers and applications
Plan, perform, upgrade and improve operating systems and applications
Monitor and improve overall systems security
Provide programming expertise to ePortfolio project (primarily Perl)
Participate in periodic emergency on-call rotation
Develop policies, procedures and best practices
MINIMUM DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree and three years experience with Unix System Administration, or an equivalent combination of education and related work experiences.
Proven proficiency with: UNIX (particularly Linux) system administration
Proven proficiency developing web based applications using Perl
Demonstrated proficiency in:
Using diagnostic tools such as strace, truss, ethereal
Working knowledge of scripting languages such as bash, perl and php.
Working knowledge of client browsers, web servers
Working knowledge of MySQL
Proven ability to independently solve problems.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field. Prior experience in a university setting. Open to new ideas and technologies, and wants to learn. Demonstrated knowledge in many of the following topics:
experience with redhat enterprise Linux or other unix flavors (Debian, Ubuntu)
experience with developing and deploying web based applications using Perl
knowledge of Oracle a plus
knowledge of HTTP protocol a plus
