The lightweight node price in Quote #2 is $2605, so we could add about six more nodes for $16K.

The lightweight node price in Quote #1 is $1987, so we would lose about eight nodes if we needed to reduce the cost by $16K.

In Conclusion

The main differences between Vendor #1, Quote 2 and Vendor #2, Quote 2 is that the Vendor 2 quote provides fewer nodes, more cores (all are quad-core), and extends the infiniband connectivity to all nodes. Extending infiniband to all 40 nodes in Vendor #1's Quote 2 would bring the price up to $195K (estimated). Upgrading the 40 work nodes to 5355 (2.66 GHz) quad-core processors would add another $20K (a very rough maximum estimate), bringing the total to $215K (for a cluster that has 10 more nodes than the Vendor #2 quote). Vendor #2 quotes seem to cost considerably more, even when normalizing for the more advanced hardware.
