JOB TITLE: Unix Systems Administrator
DEPARTMENT: Information Technology Services
GRADE: 6
RANGE: $44,500 - $55,500 (Let us Talk about this.)
TYPICAL DUTIES: The Unix Systems Administrator will provide administrative support to ensure reliability, availability and security of the University's central unix systems hardware and software. Reports to the Unix Systems Group Manager of Information Technology Services.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide Unix Systems Administration support
Install, configure and maintain central servers and applications
Plan, perform, upgrade and improve operating systems, fine tune kernel performance
Manage, secure and improve university wide electronic mail systems and infrastructure
Monitor and improve overall systems security, collaborate with network group
Manage and improve SAN/NAS based storage devices
Provide programming expertise to university projects as needed
Participate in periodic emergency on-call rotation
Develop policies, procedures and best practices
MINIMUM DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree and five years experience with Unix System Administration, or an equivalent combination of education and related work experience.
Proven proficiency with: UNIX (particularly Linux) system administration
Email systems configurations and deployment
Network based storage devices.
Basic understanding of
DNS, DHCP, and TCP/IP network administration
Demonstrated proficiency in:
Using diagnostic tools such as strace, truss, ethereal, working knowledge with shell scripting
Working knowledge of scripting languages such as bash, perl and php.
Demonstrated ability to work with open source as well as commercial software solutions. appliances and applications.
Proven ability to independently solve problems.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field. Prior experience in a university setting. Open to new ideas and technologies, and wants to learn. Demonstrated knowledge in many of the following topics:
experience with redhat enterprise Linux and other unix flavors (Debian, Ubuntu)
experience with electronic mail applications and protocols; Cyrus, Sendmail, SMTP, IMAP, POP, etc.
experience in deployment and configuration of SpamAssassin, MailScanner, MimeDefang, SquirrelMail, Pine
experience with SAN/NAS storage devices; prefer NetApp familiarity
experience with alerting and motoring tools; for example Nagios and Cacti
experience with Apache, Tomcat configurations, including vhost, clustering, rewrites, redirects
experience with Wordpress blogging software, Confluence wiki software a plus
knowledge of databases a plus
