Job Description

JOB TITLE: Application and Systems Programmer


DEPARTMENT: Information Technology Services


GRADE: 6


RANGE: $44,500 - $55,500 (Let us Talk about this.)



TYPICAL DUTIES: The Application and Systems Programmer will provide programming support support for web based applications (50%) and administrative systems (50%). The application support is primarily the ePortfolio framework (Perl based). The systems support is primarily unix based scripting and may include general unix system administration. Reports to the Unix Systems Group Manager of Information Technology Services.



RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide programming expertise to ePortfolio project (primarily Perl)
  • Provide programming support for systems administration (primarily unix based scripting)
  • Provide Unix Systems Administration support
  • Participate in periodic emergency on-call rotation
  • Develop policies, procedures and best practices




MINIMUM DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree and two years experience with programming tasks/projects or an equivalent combination of education and related work experiences.
  • Proven proficiency developing web based applications using Perl


Demonstrated proficiency in:

  • Using diagnostic tools such as strace, truss, ethereal
  • Working knowledge of scripting languages such as bash, perl and php.
  • Working knowledge of client browsers, web servers
  • Working knowledge of MySQL
  • Proven ability to independently solve problems.




PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field. Prior experience in a university setting. Open to new ideas and technologies, and wants to learn. Demonstrated knowledge in many of the following topics:

  • experience with redhat enterprise Linux or other unix flavors (Debian, Ubuntu)
  • experience with developing and deploying web based applications using Perl
  • knowledge of Oracle a plus
  • knowledge of HTTP protocol a plus
