Job Description

JOB TITLE: Unix Systems Administrator and Perl Programmer


DEPARTMENT: Information Technology Services


GRADE: 6


RANGE: $44,500 - $55,500 (Let us Talk about this.)



TYPICAL DUTIES: The Unix Systems Administrator will provide administrative support to ensure reliability, availability and security of the University's central unix systems hardware and software (50%). The Perl Programmer will support the ePortfolio framework (50%). Reports to the Unix Systems Group Manager of Information Technology Services.



RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide Unix Systems Administration support
  • Install, configure and maintain central servers and applications
  • Plan, perform, upgrade and improve operating systems and applications
  • Monitor and improve overall systems security
  • Provide programming expertise to ePortfolio project (primarily Perl)
  • Participate in periodic emergency on-call rotation
  • Develop policies, procedures and best practices




MINIMUM DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree and three years experience with Unix System Administration, or an equivalent combination of education and related work experiences.
  • Proven proficiency with: UNIX (particularly Linux) system administration
  • Proven proficiency developing web based applications using Perl


Demonstrated proficiency in:

  • Using diagnostic tools such as strace, truss, ethereal
  • Working knowledge of scripting languages such as bash, perl and php.
  • Working knowledge of client browsers, web servers
  • Working knowledge of MySQL
  • Proven ability to independently solve problems.




PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field. Prior experience in a university setting. Open to new ideas and technologies, and wants to learn. Demonstrated knowledge in many of the following topics:

  • experience with redhat enterprise Linux or other unix flavors (Debian, Ubuntu)
  • experience with developing and deploying web based applications using Perl
  • knowledge of Oracle a plus
  • knowledge of HTTP protocol a plus
