JOB TITLE: Unix Systems Administrator and Perl Programmer
DEPARTMENT: Information Technology Services
GRADE: 6
RANGE: $44,500 - $55,500 (Let us Talk about this.)
TYPICAL DUTIES: The Unix Systems Administrator will provide administrative support to ensure reliability, availability and security of the University's central unix systems hardware and software (50%). The Perl Programmer will support the ePortfolio framework (50%). Reports to the Unix Systems Group Manager of Information Technology Services.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide Unix Systems Administration support
- Install, configure and maintain central servers and applications
- Plan, perform, upgrade and improve operating systems and applications
- Monitor and improve overall systems security
- Provide programming expertise to ePortfolio project (primarily Perl)
- Participate in periodic emergency on-call rotation
- Develop policies, procedures and best practices
MINIMUM DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree and three years experience with Unix System Administration, or an equivalent combination of education and related work experiences.
- Proven proficiency with: UNIX (particularly Linux) system administration
- Proven proficiency developing web based applications using Perl
Demonstrated proficiency in:
- Using diagnostic tools such as strace, truss, ethereal
- Working knowledge of scripting languages such as bash, perl and php.
- Working knowledge of client browsers, web servers
- Working knowledge of MySQL
- Proven ability to independently solve problems.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field. Prior experience in a university setting. Open to new ideas and technologies, and wants to learn. Demonstrated knowledge in many of the following topics:
- experience with redhat enterprise Linux or other unix flavors (Debian, Ubuntu)
- experience with developing and deploying web based applications using Perl
- knowledge of Oracle a plus
- knowledge of HTTP protocol a plus
