JOB TITLE: Senior Unix Systems Administrator


DEPARTMENT: Information Technology Services


GRADE: ?


RANGE: $55,000 - $65,000


TYPICAL DUTIES: Reporting to the Unix Systems Group Manager, the Senior Unix Systems Administrator will provide administrative systems support to ITS and Unix support services to the user community.


Responsibilities include:

  • The Senior Unix System Administrator maintains hardware, firmware, operating systems, and provides support, including performs design, analysis, installation, configuration, testing, tuning, troubleshooting and documentation of computer systems, storage systems and virtual systems.
  • The Senior Unix System Administrator is responsible for systems management including configuration, security, resource monitoring and reporting, and the development of specialized programs.
  • The Senior Unix System Administrator is responsible for technology knowledge and skills transfer to the Junior Systems Administrator involving computer systems, storage systems, and virtual systems.
  • System administration includes coordinating software issues with commercial vendors and open source forums.
  • Participate in periodic emergency on-call rotation;
  • Partner with other members of Technical Support, Administrative Support and Academic Computing Support Services to coordinate technologies and share knowledge;



MINIMUM DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree and 5+ years experience with Unix system administration, or an equivalent combination of education and related work experience. Proven proficiency with Unix system administration (for example Linux using RHEL, CentOS or Scientific Linux), shell scripting and unix tools (for example sed, awk, bash), proficiency in certain program languages (for example Perl), and ability to work with open source software solutions. In addition proven proficiency in managing storage solution (for example NetApp SANs) and managing virtualization solution platforms (for example VMware, OracleVM). Proven ability to independently solve problems. —-
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Prior experience in a university setting. Demonstrated familiarity managing email applications and infrastructure (for example sendmail and cyrus, as well as deploying client solutions such as squirrelmail). Demonstrated experience in the ability to transfers skills and train co-workers.
